Unfortunately they won’t give me any information on a claims adjuster because they refuse to admit that I have a policy. He head of the State Farm office in my town has said that all over Louisiana, Fairplan is denying people have policies and refusing to do anything. They won’t even file a claim or do anything because they say I am not a policyholder.
My current policy will expire on the 23rd. I obviously cannot renew with Fairplan at this point since they claim to have no records of me. I also cannot get other insurance with the current condition of the home. We have to fix things up and we have been desperately trying to clean up debris and used a dehumidifier to straighten up the floor that had warped. We don’t have the money for all of the repairs though.
But its not like we are sitting around doing nothing. We are trying to do what we can in the meantime. Its just an added stresser I don’t need at this point.
I will continue to try to contact Fairplan though to see if they suddenly remember anything.
Thank you for your advice. I really appreciate it.

Thank you Diana. Unfortunately that first number is for Citizens Insurance, not Fairplan. In fact, Fairplan redirected me to that number before when I tried to contact them. They kept giving me the run around. I wouldn’t mind so much if they were just to admit that they are too busy at the moment to handle my claim, but flat out denying that I have one is just opprobrious.

Dear Sue, If State Farm has a Declarations Page for you, showing the company, your name, and dates and coverages then you DO have a policy. You should have had a renewal notice for the coming year about 45 days ago. Usually in these circumstances, and Florida has a lot of practice with this, the company cannot cancel you and you do have continuing coverage until it is determined that the consumer has a reasonable amount of time to pay for his new policy or shop for something new. (By the way, the mortgage company has an obligation to buy a policy for you, if one is not forthcoming.) Again, I would not contact the mortgage company under these circumstances. Keep pushing and try to file a claim and say that you have the declarations page in hand, which proves that you do have a policy. When you get your adjuster, make sure to hang on to his number and make him your number one contact person. Thank you. Sincerely, James W. Bolenbaugh

To FAIR plan insuree dated 10/14/05…as they stated, I am neither poor nor live in a less than desirable district. I moved here and was told LA. insurance companies (All of them) were not writing insurance policies for new homeowners. I was FORCED to get on this insurance “pool” and my premiums are twice as high as other people I know who have “decent” insurance coverage…do I keep paying (i’ve had minimal damage due to Katrina, but will not file a claim) outragious premiums, $2500.00+ per yr for NOTHING??? Everyone here is right…someone better step in and see that something is done…I’m afraid the FAIR plan is anything but! I was told it was backed by LA State…how corrupt is that????

If you see a deductible for wind in your policy, then you do have wind coverage.

I sure did misunderstand. You are really in a box. I think some of these other comments have some constructive suggestions.

I had the same problem. We were given a temporary claim number and repeatedly told that someone would call us back within 72 hours. After calling for the 3rd time, I asked to speak to a supervisor. I fussed and then gave the phone to my husband. He explained to the supervisor that I was pregnant and we needed an advancement, etc. This supervisor then gave us a permanent claim number…so we were told! After hearing nothing back from them again, my husband called the insurance commissioner and explained that his wife was pregnant, we could not live in our home, etc. That day we FINALLY received a call from our insurance company. Althought it took 3 different adjusters calling us, we did get an adjuster assigned to us and the adjuster has been helpful thus far.

Yes, I too have Louisiana Fairplan. I am not poor! I bought my home towards the end of 2002. Louisiana Fairplan was the ONLY insurance company writing for Louisiana residents who needed homeowners due to Louisiana being considered an AT RISK STATE. In July of THIS year, I tried to switch to another company due to the extremely high premiums. However, once again, I was told no other insurance companies were writing for Louisiana residents at the time…and I have never filed claimes. Therefore, just because someone has Louisiana Fairplan, it does not mean that person is poor and you CAN have Louisiana Fairplan for more than 2 years. I have had them for over 3 now! Louisaina residents who have purchased homes recently have no options for insurance! This line that it’s for poor people is a line of crap.
