Gov. Mitt Romney is expected to sign a bill that will require bars and nightclubs in Massachusetts with a capacity of 100 or more people to install sprinkler systems.
The measure grants tax breaks to business owners to help defray the costs of installing the new systems and funnels additional funds to local fire departments for tougher fire safety enforcement, better training and additional equipment purchases.
The bill was passed in the aftermath of last year’s deadly fire at a nightclub in West Warwick, R.I. Rhode Island has since enacted a new law mandating sprinklers in bars and clubs holding 150 people or more.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends the 150 seat capacity as a minimum requirement.
