The owner of a sawmill in Pickens, S.C. says about 50 workers will be jobless after fire burned the operation.
The Greenville News reported an insurance adjuster was expected at Durham’s Hardwood on July 18 to determine if the building could be salvaged. Owner Cecil Durham estimated the damage at around $1 million.
Pickens firefighter Scott Howard says two fire engines and about 30 firefighters responded to the call at the mill July 16 and fought the blaze for about four hours.
Howard says firefighters were called back to the mill on July 17. He said it was hard to deal with all the sawdust at the mill.
The Pickens County sheriff’s office said the fire might have started from welding at the mill.
