According to information from the Alabama Department of Insurance,
once hurricanes pass certain coordinates on the global map, insurance companies will cease offering new coverage and will not allow payments on lapsed coverage. The coordinates are determined by the individual companies.
Alabama insurers are reportedly not writing new coverage at this point as Hurricane Ivan makes its way from the Gulf of Mexico. Renewals are accepted provided payment is received prior to the deadline according to the policy.
Companies will begin writing coverage again after a hurricane threat is over – which is generally defined as when the final storm watch is lifted in Alabama.
