Texas Mutual Awards $400K in Annual Safety Education Grants

February 5, 2014

Texas Mutual Insurance Company has awarded a combined $400,000 in grants to Kilgore College, Midland College, College of the Mainland in Texas City near Houston and Del Mar College in Corpus Christi.

The grants fund free workplace safety courses for employers, employees and the general public through the colleges’ risk management institutes.

Since 1999, Texas Mutual—the state’s leading provider of workers’ compensation insurance—has awarded a combined $3.5 million in safety education grants, and nearly 30,000 students have attended free safety courses in Kilgore, Midland and Texas City over the past 15 years. This is the inaugural year of the Del Mar College Bus Safety First program, made possible by Texas Mutual’s support.

“For nearly 10 years, Midland-area employers and employees have benefitted greatly from these courses at Midland College, made possible through the ongoing partnership with Texas Mutual,” Steve Thomas, Ph.D., president of Midland College, said. “We are proud to continue to offer workplace safety education opportunities and grateful for Texas Mutual’s continued support of the Risk Management Institute.”

Courses at the safety institutes include general topics, such as ergonomic safety and OSHA standards, and students may also choose to attend courses tailored to the dominant industries in the Houston, Midland, Kilgore and Corpus Christi areas. Del Mar College will launch its safety institute with an initiative on safety training for school bus drivers and city bus drivers, with plans to eventually expand the program to include small- and mid-size businesses.

“We are pleased to add a fourth college to the grant program this year, as it means more Texas employees are receiving free safety training, and workplace safety education is always a sound investment,” Woody Hill, vice president of safety services at Texas Mutual, said. “These grants, along with other Texas Mutual safety programs, exemplify the company’s ongoing commitment to workplace safety and the prevention of workplace accidents through education. We recognize the value safety education provides to employers and employees—giving them tools to be successful in business, and more importantly, keeping employees safe.”
