The sheriff’s office in Robeson County, N.C., is accusing a woman of setting fire to her home in Red Springs in an attempt to collect insurance money.
Fire investigator Lt. Brian Duckworth said 39-year-old Marcia Reanee Chavis was charged with fraudulently burning her own dwelling, insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense.
Duckworth said the fire was reported on May 10. He said the fire started inside the home when a piece of clothing was ignited. Volunteer firefighters managed to put the fire out and prevented it from destroying the home.
Chavis and her two children lived in the home. No one was hurt.
