Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Funds Still Available

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation still has $1.25 million to distribute to nonprofit groups for Hurricane Katrina recovery projects.

The money comes from the Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Fund, which at one point was at $32 million. The funds were raised through the televised “Mississippi Rising” concert after Katrina struck in 2005, from the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund and from private donations worldwide.

The money has been administered by the Gulf Coast Community Foundation for a wide range of projects.

The foundation will consider proposals from nonprofits for projects that will fill housing needs in the state’s six southernmost counties.

Groups have a Nov. 6 deadline to apply for money, and the grants will be awarded in mid-December.
