The Arkansas Forestry Commission says crews suppressed more than 50 wildfires over the holiday weekend.
The commission says workers contained 51 wildfires that burned some 2,200 acres between Friday afternoon and Monday afternoon. Crews suppressed another 16 wildfires by Tuesday afternoon.
The commission says several homes were evacuated and small planes dropped loads of water on a 475-acre fire in southwest Arkansas’ Pike County. Fire crews also contained a 550-acre blaze that crossed the state line into Louisiana.
The commission warns residents in fire danger zones to avoid burning or doing anything that could spark a blaze. County judges have issued burn bans in 12 out of Arkansas’ 75 counties.
