1981 is when you hadt start carrying an ID Card or proof of insurance in your vehicle. I remember lines out the door when that happened!

What all you have said is right, the question of how to deal with it becomes complex right away.
First, you must have adequate uninsured motorist. There are always cracks. For example, a stolen car is always uninsured. The driver is not insured by his victim. Unless you can show negligence on the part of the car owner he\’s not at-fault for the accident.
Second, what limits are adequate for the mandate? Obviously the current limits won\’t pay for a real wreck. How about unlimited medical like workers compensation?
Third, if the bus doesn\’t go where you need to go….there are more places buses don\’t go than where they go.

It\’s the liberals like this that will keep the system from working. The REAL number of uninsured motorist is probably closer to 38%. The 25% comes from TXDPS statistics and/or \”blue forms\” based on REPORTED accidents. I know of a police accident investigator that worked an accident involving five cars, and NON of them had insurance!

As far as the \”poor people not being able to afford it\” – driving on the streets of Texas is a PRIVILEGE….NOT a RIGHT! The poor people that you talk about are the ones that can LEAST AFFORD to be involved in an accident with an uninsured driver.

Hopefully the electronic verification program set to go live in December, 2006 will help to police this. In States that have a valid system, the UM rate is in the single digit area.

There are economic effects to keep in mind. One of the strongest forces in our economy is the ability to travel, to GO get done what you need to do.
If you can GO you can go do that job and make money. You can sell or buy. If you have a product to sell it\’s not likely you can take it with you so well on a crowded bus. In addition you can do it now, not whenever some public transport finally comes your way.
Arlington Texas, by-the-way, with a 300,000 population has no bus or train service except for a handicap service. Got taxis if you can find one.
Got few homeless because if you can\’t buy a car you can\’t get anywhere from where you are unless you can walk good.

Hal, RE: \”if a bus does NOT go where you need to go…..\” – I\’ve started noticing bicycle racks on the local busses. Maybe THAT is a novel idea.

I had a customer push a bicycle into my office one day as that was the ONLY means of transportation that she had left – after she was hit by an uninsured motorist. She was about to lose her job (due to the riding the bike to work and getting all sweatty) – so, who pays for her unemployment? Okay, everybody at once……RAISE YOUR HAND!

A bike is a good idea. I have a buyer I need to visit with (about a 30 minute visit) in Mart Texas. Mart is about 22 miles east of Waco. I can take a Greyhound or whatever bus goes to Waco then ride my bike to Mart. I\’ll need to spend the night at my friend\’s house and make the trip back the next day.
After a 25 mile bike ride to his office I expect the visit to be shorter than 30 minutes.

And as far as your DUI/OMVI people. One is a mistake, two your dumb. Three, take one of them old ball and chains, hook\’em up to it and drop it in a lake/ocean… whatever is closer.
