I hope the \”vendor\” chosen to organize insurance verification contemplates car dealers. Car dealers do not have plates specifically assigned to a VIN. Nor, do they register autos held for sale. They are only registered once a retail sale is made. Insurance reporting has been problematic for dealers\’ demo\’s in a few states. Some states really missed this.
If anyone knows the right people in Texas to talk to about this I would be more than happy to volunteer my time making sure they have a handle on what to do with car dealers.
Though it pains me greatly to allow government control of any facet of my life, I believe the law requiring liability insurance for driving in Texas is a good law. The problem is, it is of little use if it is not inforced. I applaude the \”get tough\” efforts of certain cities in Texas to finally enforce these existing laws. It is fundamentally unfair to permit a substantial number of Texas citizens and not-citizens to irisponsably drive without insurance. As an agent, I am tired of receiving loss reports from insureds who have been damaged by uninsured drivers. These costs are being passed along to those who do the right thing by carring insurance and following the law. I am not sure so called \”no fault\” insurance will solve this problem either as the system still has to absorb some of the cost of uninsured drivers.
I am so happy Texas cities are finally taking the sort of action that will actually have an effect on this problem. (Fines didn\’t work, because they were less expensive than buying the insurance) Now, if we could just get them to impound the autos of folks who have multiple DUI/DWI arrests! That is the only way to stop this abuse, too.

I think the mandatory liability insurance was passed in Texas several years earlier than 1981. I\’m thinking 1974 or 75.
Anybody got a sharp memory?

Sorry about the misspelling of Mandatory in the last post.
