Rhode Island took the top spot in a new study of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data on states with the most fatal vehicle crashes involving speeding.
Nearly half (46.01%) of all fatal crashes in the state were a result of speeding offenses. The state experienced 313 fatal crashes in the five years, with 144 reported as speeding related. Coming in second was Hawaii with 483 fatal crashes, with 216 of them a result of speeding drivers, or 44.72% of all confirmed fatalities from cases where speed was the primary fault, according to the study, which was conducted byThe Fitch Law Firm, a personal injury lawyer based in Ohio.
Third in the ranking was South Carolina, with 43.23% of all fatal crashes being related to speeding..
The study used NHTSA reporting on the number of fatal crashes per state between 2017 and 2021 and the number where speeding was primarily responsible.
