Authorities say a semitrailer crash that snarled traffic on Interstate 94 near Valley City, N.D., last week caused extensive damage.
The crash on Wednesday took out a bridge guard rail and spilled barley into the ditch. It forced the shutdown of one lane on the interstate.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation tells KOVC-AM that engineers are investigating whether there is any significant damage to the bridge as well. The state agency says it could be weeks before repairs are made.
Authorities say 46-year-old Terry Johnson was driving the semitrailer. They say the Valley City man later crashed a pickup truck into a pole in a hotel parking lot in the city.
The station reports Johnson is in custody facing various drug charges. It’s unclear whether he has legal representation.
