Kansas Highway Patrol troopers will begin placing red ribbons on their vehicles this week to encourage motorists to be careful during the holiday season.
Starting Thanksgiving, Highway Patrol vehicles will have ribbons tied to their side mirrors or antenna. The campaign is sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
According to patrol statistics, almost 30 percent of the fatality crashes in Kansas involved alcohol. In addition, 62 percent of those killed in Kansas were not wearing safety belts in 2007.
Ribbons are being distributed by MADD for free at patrol headquarters and locations statewide.
