I don’t usually agree with Lastbat but hey if getting a monetary judgment to get people to stop the insanity of the “sex and drugs under my supervision and all is well” defense then so be it. And yes they will go crazy on the judgment partially because it’s meant to “scare” other parents and serve as an example. It kills me when people act like just they are NOW responsible adults that they do not remember the wild and crazy things they did in high school and let’s not even talk about college…

Kids do stupid stuff and unfortunately a life had to be lost to let people know that tomorrow is not promised to you.

Depending on the age of these parents, can they be given a castration and a hysterectomy as a judgment?

    Just a thought…

From reading the article it seems to me that the driver was most likely trying to show off to his friend(s). The two were killed at “the end of the driveway” which leads me to believe exhibition of speed was involved. Definitely a lot of culpability on the part of the driver and the passengers parents should be suing the drivers parents for not teaching their kid safe driving skills and not teaching their kid not to drink and drive. Heck, Might as well sue the manufacturer for making a car that can accelerate rapidly while we’re at it.
This country is going to hell in a handbasket because of lack of serious tort reform.

I’m really not believing that I’m reading comments posted by insurance agents and obviously not by parents. Would any of you knowingly allow underage drinking in your home? Come on, it’s the LAW stupid. You’ve obviously never been to a funeral for one of these age deprived youngsters – no, no one held a gun to their heads and forced them to drink, but there wasn’t a responsible adult around either, reminding them that this abuse is unlawful, unsafe and NOT allowed in our house. Grow up! Be the adult and set a good example.

They struck a tree at the end of the driveway??? Unless it was a long driveway, most driveways I see while driving are short so they must have gunned it to have caused life ending injuries.

The article mentions that the hosting family had numerous parties where alcohol was served. Did the parents of the deceased know this, and still allowed their child to attend?

Trace was driving, but Bell’s family is suing because their stupid kid got in the car of a drunk? Is Trace suing as well?

Okay, yes sue the family but… what happens to the stupid parents who apparently knew that there were previous parties where kids where drinking on these people’s premisis…. let’s not place all the blame on this kids parents… if this incident did not happen… they would continue to send there child to this event..with every cause there is an effect!

For real, an 18-year-old kid who was raised right should know better than to drink underage and certainly not to get in the car with someone who has been drinking. But (and we all know this), get a teenage boy together with a bunch of friends and see who has the willpower to say no. It was the homeowners’ responsibility to ensure these kids were all behaving appropriately since it was their house, and whether they allowed the drinking or not, they should have taken keys away and called the parents. It is their fault ultimately and they should be held accountable.

You may not like the law, but it is the law, and if you want to live here, you are required to obey the law. The people being sued here compounded their problem by not only breaking the law and allowing underage drinking in their home, they apparently also allowed them to drink to the point of getting drunk.

yes, you do deny him a beer in your house BECAUSE IT’S ILLEGAL !

Suppose he’s from Amsterdam……..fire up the joints ?

    You should know better.

An 18 year old is not a “child”. The law needs to be changed; it’s antiquated. It’s not illegal for anyone over the age of 18 to drink…..they just can’t legally purchase. The hosts were punished appropriately. The surviving parents should not be unjustly enriched because their kid screwed up by the numbers. Ohioan’s points are right on. Personal responsibility has been eroded in this country to the point nobody is responsible for anything they do.

I agree the drinking limit here is stupid. But it’s still the law.

There is also a great big heaping bit of personal responsibility involved. I was in the military for a number of years (4 to be exact) before hitting the legal drinking age. I was in bars and offered alcohol countless times. I never drank anything but soda or water. It’s not impossible to refuse.

It sucks but the homeowners allowed underage drinking in their home. They are legally responsible. And just because you don’t agree with a law doesn’t mean you get to break it without consequence. Even the counter-sitters in the 60’s got their heads cracked for breaking the law. If you don’t like the law then work to get it changed.

And my daughter will never drink under the age of 21 in my house or in my presence. She will also not be allowed to have sex with her boyfriend in my house until she is ready to handle the consequenses (who among us really is?). And if I ever hear of her partaking of illegal substances I will deal with it appropriatly no matter what her age – interpret that as you will. Responsible parenting could have prevented this tragedy. Responsible teenagers could have prevented this tragedy. But neither happened. Someone will pay for letting the law be broken. That will be the dead people and the homeowners.

    Sucks.
