    T.M.
For a health care \”professional\” you sure don\’t spell very well. Your thinking is pretty flawed as well. Vehicle insurance has NOT gone up in any of the 30 states that have repealed their helmet law. Check your facts before repeating someone elses lies!
While you are at it, why not insist all car drivers AND passengers wear helmets. 99% of all taxpayer assisted head injury costs are due to those injured in CAR accidents! There are many many more cars than bikes on the road.
I pay for my insurance as do all bikers, in the same ratio as car drivers.
TM, I don\’t believe you are a rider at all or you would never let your riding brothers and sisters down like you did. If you are really old enough to decide for yourself to wear a helmet, why can\’t I have the same right to decide NOT to wear a helmet?
By the way, how about sitting down right now and writing out a nice fat contributiopn to Jenny? It would be fun to watch you throwing your $$$ away when she goes down the drain in November!!!

Al Salmi (not ashamed to sign my name!)

PS You made 3 spelling errors in two sentences. See below. We should trust your intelligence on other matters??? See if you can even find them!

TM said: \”I am glad she veto the helmet law. Being a health care professional,I believe it does save lives and repelling the law would drive health care and vechile insurance up.\”

I wear a helmet and I will even if the law is to pass, but this is just another right to free choice that we have to live without, It is the nail that sealed the coffin on her term in office, those of us that ride and oppose this law have enough vote to put her out, so this will just delay the bill, it will come around again and the next Governor will sign it. So long Granholm dont let the door hit you on your way out. OH by the way AAA just lost my buisness I took all my policy and cancelled them.

Is this a Democracy or a Monarchy, the governor sided with her campaign contributors, it\’s big money that won.

I can\’t believe either her or the insurance group that said insurance rates will go up, that has not happened in the other states that dropped their helmet laws. Enough of the crap about being a business decision.

What about increasing Michigan\’ tourism by $1.2 Billion, how is that a good business decision.

I will as someone else said make sure she is sent back to Canada. I agree with the State trooper, I\’m a retired State emplolyee and just plain disgusted with the governor. If she wants to be the queen, take it someplace else. A good politican would not do something like this and anger a large body of voters.
Dick DeVos said he would have signed the bill, we will make sure he gets a chance next year.

I am a 37 year old mother of two, I am a friend to bikers and have been in a major car wreck that put me into a windshield. My children were buckled because that is what good parents do. I was in the state of NH at the time and mandatory seatbelt laws for adults were not in effect.

I was not buckled nor was the female passenger in the car. Both of us received head & facial injuries. I CHOSE to begin wearing my seatbelt after this crash. I was not forced by any laws, it was my own personal choice to keep myself from eating glass. Till this day I buckle up, but I have never nor will I ever support any mandatory seatbelt laws for any person over 18. I support under-age laws because lets face it, some parents out there do not always do what is in their childs best interest and children do not have the ability to choose wisely at at a young age, but for adults…its their body and their choice I feel just the same about helmet laws.

ANY recreation, sport or bad decision can lead to serious injury and cost people money, we cannot go around limiting everyone\’s right to live freely and make their own personal body choices.

I hope your organizations/ lobbist, are happy with the outcome of the governors vito of the helmet appeal bill. This vito might have saved your companies money, or not.It sure don\’t help Michigans summertime tourist economy. Between the already high cost of auto and motorcycle insurance and the cost of gasoline. I\’m a biker, who\’s talked to alot of other biker/enthusist from states where there are no helmet laws who refuse to ride in our state because they have to pack a helmet across all the states that don\’t require them, just to enjoy our highways and scenery. You people in the big business of insurance already attach 100.00 per vehicle insured in this state, for the cadistrofic fund. Now times that by how many registerd vehicles in this state? i don\’t think my calculater can count how much extra money insurance companys take in a year,on top of the already high rates we\’re charged. But all my ventings won\’t change a thing. People make changes happen. This fall, a change is comming in our government. With the right decision making in the last four years J.G. might have had a chance for re-election. But either she\’s had bad advisers or made some poor decisions on her own, but because of certain issues shes either vitoed or voted for she\’ll have a hard time retaining her seat this fall. I\’ve fought for this country to keep it free, and freedom of choice is my stand. The choice to live here or there or wherever. It\’s all about freedom of choice. Personally I\’d wear a helmet most of the time, but there\’s a time and a place, at my choosing I won\’t. So, not unlike the seatbelt law we have no choice. Bad decisions are made on our behalfs everyday by people who begged for our votes to be put in office only to forget about the little person that helped get them there, it suck\’s SideStep

Seems this is a hot topic for the bikers out there. Politics, price gouging, personal attacks. Wow. What percentage of the voting public are riders? My guess would be less than 5. By the way, 46 y/o never ridden, but will soon.

Bob says: If you can cover 100% of your injuries, then go without a helmet.

We really should be saying the same about drivers of all motor vehicles, because irresponsible drivers come in all forms of vehicle, from two wheels to eighteen.

If you would force a biker to carry huge insurance policies, then you should encourage all.

Check on those statistics to find out how many auto accidents COULD have been prevented if only the driver had either a bit more experience, was not running so late to work he cut off others, did not fall asleep behind the wheel, was bit talking on the cell phone, changing CD\’s, screaming at kids in the back seat…etc.

C\’mon so many auto accidents that resulted in death or lifelong disability of the driver, the 1-6 other passengers, pedestrians, other drivers and their passengers, property damage… are caused by carelessness yet everyone pays without thinking about it…its just the bikers who cause the problems eh?

For the record, I have ridden on motorcycles with a helmet, but I am not a biker, probably will never ride my own bike either, but will always defend a persons right to choose how they defend or protect their own body.

Oh, but it\’s okay to pick up the tab for auto accident victims who account for half of all head injuries. Hypocrite.

Well Said ZenMan, thought it should be said again!!!

I agree with Becky. I don\’t ride but am in insurance but still feel it should be up to the individual whether you wear a seat belt(and everyone in my car wears a belt or walks!) or helmet. Maybe living in NH has something to do with my attitude. Maybe it is something in the water here!

As to the economic justification for helmet laws check out table 15 on page 38 at

    http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/pdf/nrd-30/NCSA/CODES/codesrpt.pdf

The cost to society is no greater when people wear helmets. The fact that medical costs for those not wearing helmets is LESS (thats right- LESS!) may be due to many without helmets skipping the hospital and going directly to the funeral home may be a good reason to wear a helmet but that should be up to the individual and not Lansing or Washington.

    Underwriter2 says…

And congratulations to Becky for so adroitly twisting injury statistics to \”prove\” no difference in medical costs between helmeted and unhelmeted riders. The article she cited expressly stated that once brain injuries were inflicted, the average costs were about the same between the two groups, but that the unhelmeted riders were much more likely to suffer brain injuries than the helmeted riders, hard as that might be to accept.

Underwriter…please direct me to where I \”so adroitly twisting injury statistics to \”prove\” no difference in medical costs between helmeted and unhelmeted riders\”

I believe that you have made yet another mistake…I did not say that, you are attempting to point the finger at the wrong person without checking your facts.

If you cannot quote the correct person when you are making a statement, it lends doubt to your credibility.
