New York City officials are launching a hurricane awareness campaign to help residents prepare for the upcoming storm season.

“Know Your Zone” is being billed as a “one-stop-shop” for hurricane preparedness. New Yorkers can log onto the city’s website (http://nyc.gov/knowyourzone ) to find out which evacuation zone they reside in. There are six evacuation zones across the five boroughs.
The site also allows residents to sign up for updates from Notify NYC, which is the city’s official source of information about emergency services.
Joseph Bruno, the city’s commissioner of the office of emergency management, says the damage wrought by Superstorm Sandy in 2012 is a reminder that residents must be prepared for a bad storm.
Sandy killed 147 people and caused $50 billion in damage along the eastern seaboard.
