A jury has awarded a Lowell, Mass., family at least $5 million after finding that medical professionals at Tufts Medical Center were negligent in caring for their newborn son in 2004.
The family of Edward Xu alleged in their lawsuit that after he was born prematurely, two doctors and a nurse practitioner at the Boston hospital failed to take appropriate measures in response to symptoms of a potentially fatal condition.
The Boston Globe reports the lawsuit alleged that because of negligence, parts of his intestines had to be removed and he now suffers from a syndrome that makes him unable to digest food and requires tube feeding.
The hospital’s lawyer said the boy was given the best care possible and nothing the doctors or nurse did or did not do caused injury.
