New York Report Finds ‘Shocking’ Violations in Day Cares

An investigative report of day care centers statewide finds “shocking” violations and inadequate oversight of persistent violators.

Most cases involve failure to take certain precautions, leaving children unattended and unlicensed operation. A few of the most egregious cases include corporal punishment of children, frightening or humiliating a child, isolating children in closets and abuse or maltreatment.

The New York Senate’s Independent Democratic Conference’s examination of 1,584 state reports found hundreds of day care centers with multiple violations in the last 24 months.

The Senate IDC claims only a small number of centers with multiple violations have been held accountable by the Cuomo administration.

There was no immediate comment from the Office of Children and Family Services which regulates the centers.

The IDC proposes new legislation to improve oversight.
