Crane Breaks Windows of World Trade Center Tower

June 29, 2012

The plaza at the Sept. 11 memorial in New York City has been evacuated after a crane broke some windows in one of the new World Trade Center skyscrapers.

The fire department says no injuries have been reported. About 60 firefighters are at the scene.

The FDNY says the crane’s weight apparently shifted as the beam was being lifted to 4 World Trade Center at around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. It hit windows on the 45th and 46th floors.

Glass and other debris are being cleared.

The 9/11 memorial spokesman, Michael Frazier, says the plaza was evacuated. Memorial staffers were waiting for the go-ahead from the FDNY before reopening the site.

The 72-story skyscraper is expected to be the first to open at the site since the twin towers were destroyed in 2001.
