One Dead, Another Hospitalized After Pennsylvania Trench Collapse

December 17, 2010

Authorities in central Pennsylvania say one man died and another was flown to a hospital following a trench collapse during a construction project.

Officials in York County say crews were called to the scene in Newberry Township shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday when the 15- to 20-foot trench partially collapsed as the men were laying a pipe for a storm water drainage project.

County public information officer Carl Lindquist says one worker buried waist-deep was flown to Hershey Medical Center at about 10 p.m. The victim, whose name was not released, was described as conscious and alert.

But York County Deputy Coroner Terry Meyers says the other man died almost immediately after he was buried almost completely in the partial collapse. Meyers identified him as 20-year-old Jory Raber III of Etters. Lindquist said workers were still trying to recover his body.
