University of New Hampshire officials say at least 32 sailboats and other equipment were destroyed by a fire at the school’s Barrington boathouse.
Firefighters were called about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, but had trouble locating the boathouse and then were frustrated as they tried to reach the location over an unplowed road.
University spokeswoman Erika Mantz says that in addition to the 32 sailboats, two launches, wet suits, sails and riggings were lost in the fire, as was docking that was stacked beside the house.
Barrington Fire Chief Rick Walker says firefighters needed a four-wheel drive vehicle to reach the house.
He says the building collapsed before firefighters could reach it.
Officials plan to search Thursday for the cause of the fire.
