Nevada Hosts Distracted Driving Ticket Alternative

Motorists stopped for using cellphones while driving in Las Vegas could be offered a chance to clear their record by participating in an online program.

From Monday through July 10, Nevada Highway Patrol troopers can offer drivers with otherwise clean records a chance to complete specific online tasks for 28 consecutive days instead of paying a fine for driving while distracted.

Activities include documenting an instance where driving distraction-free kept the motorist safe, sharing a specific video on social media or taking a quiz about distracted driving.

The program is called the “It can wait for 28.”

Trooper Loy Hixson tells the Las Vegas Sun the Nevada Department of Public Safety, highway patrol and Clark County Justice Court are cooperating in the project.
