Authorities say a stampede after Saturday night’s Floyd Mayweather-Marcos Maidana fight in Las Vegas injured dozens of people.
Clark County Fire Department spokesman Erik Pappa said Sunday that spectators were knocked down and trampled after a loud bang noise caused panic as they left the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
He says about 50 people were assessed by emergency crews at the scene and two dozen people were taken by ambulance to local hospitals.
Pappa says the bulk of those cases involved “minor traumatic” foot, ankle and back injuries associated with being stepped on. Another person suffered a leg cut.
He says emergency crews were initially called to the MGM Grand on a false report of a gunshot victim near a food court.
But Pappa says investigators later determined that a wall or partition in the food court toppled, causing the loud bang.
