California Officer Charged in Shooting Hoax Not Ready to Plea

April 7, 2011

Arraignment has been postponed for a Los Angeles school policeman charged with faking his own shooting.

Thirty-year-old Jeff Stenroos was granted a request Wednesday to put off his arraignment until May 18. He has hired a new attorney and asked for more time before entering a plea to perjury, filing a false report, insurance fraud and other felony charges.

He faces up to five years in state prison if convicted.

Stenroos claimed that he was shot in the chest on Jan. 19 while patrolling outside El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills. He was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Some 9,000 students were held in their schools for hours while hundreds of police officers searched an eight-square-mile area in the San Fernando Valley for the gunman.
