Calif. Councilwoman Pleads No Contest to Workers’ Comp Fraud

February 28, 2011

A Northern California city councilwoman filmed exercising at the gym and taking long walks while claiming to be too injured to work has pleaded no contest to workers’ compensation fraud.

Daly City Councilwoman Maggie Gomez entered her plea to two felony counts of workers’ compensation fraud in San Mateo County Superior Court.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Guidotti says the 56-year-old is facing up to six months in jail as part of a plea agreement. She originally faced 15 felony counts.

Daly City’s city attorney, Rose Zimmerman, told the San Mateo County Times that state law requires elected officials to resign when convicted of a felony.

Gomez was serving her third term.

She was working at a Daly City medical center in 2005 when she filed the claim.
