Insurers Paid $768 Million in Losses from 2009 Colorado Windstorm

An insurance organization says a windstorm that brought two weak tornadoes, rain and hail to the western Denver suburbs last July caused $768 million in insured losses to vehicles and homes.

The Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association said that it’s the state’s most expensive disaster for insurance claims paid out, but when adjusted for inflation, a hailstorm on July 11, 1990, was still more expensive, with about $1.03 billion in insured losses in 2009 dollars.

The 2009 storm season also included wild weather June 6-15 that the association says caused an estimated $353 million in damage in Aurora, Parker, Centennial and Fort Collins and a hail storm July 29 in Pueblo with $233 million in losses.
