California’s agricultural workers’ comp safety provider, Loss Prevention Specialists, saw three of its senior safety professionals earn California AgSafe Safety Certificates at the 12th Annual AgSafe Conference, a three-day event held recently in Seaside, Calif.
According to Tom Wheeler, president of Self Insured Solutions (SIS), “Oscar Pedraza of San Diego, Steven Marquez of Ontario and Alfredo Jauregui of Woodland each actively provide training for the many ranches, farms, dairy operations and orchards served by Loss Prevention Specialists, a division of Self Insured Solutions. Recognizing that agricultural work is one of the most dangerous of trades, and that OSHA reports that Hispanic workers are far more likely to suffer serious — or even fatal — injuries on the job, our safety professionals provide bilingual training, ensuring that all of our covered workers benefit from their years of safety training expertise.
“While March 5th through 11th is officially Agricultural Safety Awareness Week in California, at Loss Prevention Specialists and Self Insured Solutions — as well as at the four agricultural self-insured groups we manage — every week is Ag-Safe Week. For us, on-the-job safety is essential to our way of doing business, something we live, eat and breathe every day of the year.”
Successful participants in the certification program were required to complete 20 hours of intensive training, and to demonstrate a high level of professional competence.
Safety professionals Pedraza, Marquez and Jauregui each received their AgSafe Safety Certificates, which were issued jointly from AgSafe as well as three state universities: the Ag Safety Institute of Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo; the Center for Agricultural Business at California State University in Fresno; and the University of California’s Center for Occupational and Environmental Health.
