Police say 88 iPhone 6 Plus models were stolen from a rental car parked outside an IHOP restaurant in Miami Springs, Florida.
Three men had driven with the phones from Tampa and hoped to sell them to a trio of potential buyers on Oct. 27.
The Miami Herald reports the buyers arrived at the prearranged meeting place. They discussed prices and reached a deal. But the buyers said they needed to “return with the money.”
The sellers drove to a nearby IHOP for lunch. Police say the men returned to the meeting spot an hour later and discovered that the phones were not in the trunk. They confronted the would-be buyers, who denied involvement. Police say there were pry marks on the vehicle’s trunk.
The phones were valued at about $60,000.
