Shatterproof Glass Planned for New West Virginia Schools

Some West Virginia lawmakers want officials to consider bulletproof glass as the state renovates and builds schools.

But School Building Authority Executive Director Mark Anthony Manchin questioned the cost during a Tuesday presentation at the Legislature.

Manchin outlined safety features planned after a gunman murdered 20 elementary school students and six adult staff in Connecticut.

Those measures include a shatterproof film for front entrance glass at all new schools. Manchin said an agency official shot and kicked a treated window to test it out. But it will not stop a bullet.

Manchin said all new schools will have a panic button in the principal’s office that will lock down the building and dial 911. Each school’s parking lot and front entrance will also be in sight of the administrative office.
