The Mississippi Development Authority says federal grants to help coast homeowners meet new post-Katrina flood standards are nearing $60 million.
MDA’s Elevation Grant Program is scheduled to complete all applicant award determinations by late March.
MDA disaster recovery official Jon Mabry said at this time last year there was no environmental review in place for the program and no awards were approved or disbursed. He said now the program is moving at a rapid pace.
EGP awards are available only to homeowners who received assistance from the separate Homeowners Assistance Program, who did not have flood insurance, and who are now required to elevate because of more stringent federal flood maps.
