A tractor-trailer caught fire and sideswiped a Department of Corrections van on Interstate 85 in South Carolina, injuring four inmates and trapping four other inmates inside the vehicle.
The Anderson Independent-Mail reported firefighters said a tire blowout led to the fire at exit 19 on I-85 on July 18. A spokeswoman for the South Carolina Highway Patrol said a spark ignited the blaze after a small rupture developed in the fuel tank.
The parked van came to rest against a guardrail about 200 yards behind the burning truck. Four inmates were transported to AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson for treatment. A correctional officer in the van also was treated but not admitted.
Officials cited the driver of the truck, Leon McCall, for driving too fast for conditions.
