Parents of an Arkansas State University student who was slain at his campus apartment three years ago have file a $1 million claim but part of the action has been dismissed.
Elijah and Jerlene Gilmore of Helena-West Helena filed with the state Claims Commission in January over the 2010 death of their son, Michael “Rudy” Gilmore. He was shot in the head and the killing remains unsolved.
Family attorney Phyllis M. Gillespie says a portion has been dismissed dealing with the victim himself. The Jonesboro Sun reports the Gilmores claim the university failed to provide a safe environment for their son and cite their pain and suffering.
An evidentiary hearing before the Claims Commission is pending.
The action cites three other student shootings between 2005 and 2008.
