Bill of Rights Summarizes Oklahoma Insurance Laws

Oklahoma insurance officials are compiling a consumer bill of rights to let home and car owners know what their legal rights are when they are affected by severe weather or some other calamity.

Commissioner of Insurance John Doak said Tuesday the index summarizes consumer rights under state law and Insurance Department rules. Legislation that authorizes it was passed in the state Senate Monday and is pending in the House.

Doak says the index will answer many common insurance questions. He says his agency receives 30,000 phone calls a year from consumers and that many of their questions are the same.

The insurance commissioner says severe weather, including tornadoes and hail storms, regularly affect Oklahoma consumers. Doak says the Oklahoma City and Lawton areas were hit by hail just last weekend.
