A Houston-area jury has returned a $20 million verdict for a rape victim who accused her apartment complex of not telling residents about other attacks.
The Houston Chronicle reports that the victim lived at the Promenade Cullen Park complex, where she was raped in February 2009.
The victim had recently renewed her lease. She says she didn’t know then that a man had tried to rape a resident next door to her apartment. She was attacked a few weeks after the first attack.
The newspaper reports that the jury awarded the victim $7 million for physical pain and mental anguish, $5 million for future mental anguish and $8 million for violations of state law to stop deceptive trade practices.
The apartment company and its lawyers could not be reached.
