Fire at Oklahoma Refuge Contained

A fire that burned an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 acres at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Oklahoma has been put out.

Comanche County Emergency Services manager Clint Wagstaff said Wednesday morning that firefighters extinguished the blaze about 1 a.m. – but remain on the scene to make sure it doesn’t reignite.

No injuries were reported – however the Treasure Lake Job Corps campus was evacuated. Rusty Surrette with the American Red Cross in Oklahoma says about 200 students and staff from the campus spent the night at a shelter in Indiahoma.

The job corps program provides education and job training to students aged 16 to 24.
