The Acadia Parish School Board has declared a state of emergency as a result of Saturday’s tornado damage at Rayne High School.
The Advocate reports Superintendent Johnny Bourque told the board that the school suffered major roof damage along with broken windows.
Bourque said school would not resume Mar. 8 as scheduled.
James Wallace, who represents the district’s property claims insurer, told the board that damage estimates at the school are at least $500,000.
The tornado packed winds of up to 135 mph and cut a path of destruction five miles long through the town. One woman was killed when a tree fell on her house as she tried to protect her 15-month-old son.
