States Await FAA Drone Testing Decision

Officials in Utah, Nevada and 22 other states are eagerly awaiting the Federal Aviation Administration’s selection of six sites where the agency will test and develop standards for drones.

States submitting bids are counting on a major economic boost if they become a test site. They also hope it will set them up in the long-term as major players in the burgeoning industry.

The unmanned aircraft systems, commonly known as drones, have been mainly used by the military.

The testing sites will help the FAA develop guidelines for commercial, domestic uses for the aircraft by 2015.

There are 25 test-site applicants in 24 states awaiting the decision.

The FAA says it will announce the six sites by the end of 2013.
