U.S. Recalls Cribs, Toy Helicopters, Fax Machines, Kids’ Jackets

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firms named below, announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

1.Stanley Furniture Recalls Cribs Due to Entrapment Hazard

Product: 2nd Nature Built to Grow Cribs.

Units: About 1,200

Manufacturer: Stanley Furniture Company Inc., of Stanleytown, Va.

Hazard: The cribs could fail to meet a federal safety standard for crib dimensions. When the mattress support is in the middle setting, the space between the mattress and the crib could be too wide, posing an entrapment hazard to infants.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves the full size 2nd Nature Built to Grow cribs, model number 353-14-220. Model and serial numbers are located on the headboard. The crib is natural maple in color. Only the following serial numbers are included in the recall: 353-14-220-L-01, 353-14-220-L-02, 353-14-220-L-03, 353-14-220-L-04, 353-14-220-L-05, 353-14-220-L-06, 353-14-220-L-07, 353-14-220-L-08, 353-14-220-L-101, and 353-14-220-L-103. The recall does not include cribs sold after December 2007.

Sold at: Department and furniture stores from March 2006 through December 2007 for about $1,100.

Manufactured in: Slovenia.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the crib in the middle mattress setting, and adjust it to the low or high setting. Contact Stanley Furniture to determine if the crib is subject to this recall, and if it is, to receive a free replacement crib headboard.

2. Westminster Inc. Recalls Remote-Controlled Helicopter Toys Due to Risk of Fire

Product: “Thunder Wolf” Remote Controlled Indoor Helicopters.

Units: About 102,000

Importer/Distributor: Westminster Inc., of Atlanta, Ga.

Hazard: The rechargeable battery inside the helicopter can overheat. This can result in the helicopter’s body melting, as well as a risk of fire or burns to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Westminster Inc. has received seven reports of overheating and/or melting of the helicopter, including one report of flames and two reports of minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The “Thunder Wolf” remote-controlled indoor helicopter is made of foam and plastic, and measures about 7 inches by 3 inches. “TW0996” is printed on the tail of the helicopter and was sold in multiple accent colors. The helicopter comes with a controller and a separate charger. Only helicopters that do not have “Made in China” stamped on the underside of the helicopter are subject to the recall.

Sold at: Retail stores nationwide from June 2007 through December 2007 for about $20.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop playing with the recalled helicopters and contact Westminster Inc. for a refund. Retailers will not accept returns or provide a refund.

3. Hewlett-Packard Co. Recalls Fax Machines Due to Fire Hazard

Product: HP Fax 1010 and 1010xi Machines.

Units: About 367,000 units (an additional 84,000 units sold outside of the U.S.)

Importer: Hewlett-Packard Co., of Palo Alto, Calif.

Hazard: An internal electrical component failure can cause overheating of the product posing a risk of burn or fire.

Incidents/Injuries: Hewlett-Packard has received three reports of overheating including two in the U.S. resulting in minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves the HP Fax 1010 and HP Fax 1010xi models manufactured from November 2002 through September 2004. The HP logo and the model name and number are printed on the front of the fax machine.

Sold at: Electronic, computer and camera stores nationwide, as well as Web retailers from November 2002 through December 2004 for between $130 and $150.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately disconnect the recalled fax machine from the electrical power source and contact HP to receive a rebate.

4. Children’s Jackets and Hoodies with Drawstrings Recalled by Coolibar Inc. Due to Strangulation Hazard

Product: Children’s Sun Block Jackets and Hoodies.

Units: About 3,000

Importer: Coolibar Inc., of St. Louis Park, Minn.

Hazard: The garments have a drawstring through the hood, posing a strangulation hazard to children. In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines (pdf) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled on the neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets or sweatshirts.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: The recalled jackets and hoodies have a drawstring through the hood. They were sold in children’s sizes 2 through 12. The jackets were sold in the following colors: tan, stone, bayou blue, crisp blue, white, berry, and citrus. The hoodies were sold in teal, kiwi, mandarin, aloe green, paprika, hibiscus, smokey blue, white, sherbet, cobalt, and stone.

Sold at: Coolibar’s catalog and website from March 2005 through April 2008 (hoodies) and from February 2008 through April 2008 (jackets) for between $25 and $40.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately remove the drawstring from the jacket or hoodie to eliminate the hazard, or contact the firm for instructions on returning the garment to the firm for a full refund.

5.Infant Garments Recalled by Rashti & Rashti Due to Choking Hazard

Product: Taggies(tm) Sleep’n Play Infant Garments.

Units: About 6,200

Importer: Rashti & Rashti, of New York, N.Y.

Hazard: The snaps on these garments can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: The recall involves two Taggies(tm) Sleep ‘n Play style infant garments sold in purple or blue and white with style number listed in chart. The infant garments are one piece footed coveralls with snaps down the front. These garments were sold in sizes 0-3 months, 3-6 months, and 6-9 months. RN #27829 is printed on the care label sewn into the garment. Style numbers are printed on the hangtag of the garments.

6. Dollar Redcat Racing Recalls Remote Controlled Toy Vehicles Due to Remote Control Defect

Product: Redcat Racing FM Remote Controlled Vehicles.

Units: About 1,400

Distributor: Redcat Racing Co., of Phoenix, Ariz.

Hazard: The remote control unit can lose its signal, causing the toy vehicle to lose control, posing a risk of injury to the user or bystanders.

Incidents/Injuries: Redcat Racing has received about 15 reports of remote control malfunctions. There have been no injuries reported.

Description: The recalled remote controls were included in the remote cars as shown below. These cars were sold in a variety of colors. The model name and numbers are located on the body of the vehicle or on the retail packaging:
