Minnesota Builders Association Sues State Over Sprinkler Mandate

February 2, 2015

The Builders Association of the Twin Cities is suing the state over a new sprinkler mandate.

The law which took effect Saturday requires a sprinkler system for all new homes that are 4,500 square feet or larger. The Builders Association says the law is too expensive and will price many buyers out of the market. The group has asked the Minnesota Court of Appeals to intervene.

The association’s past president, Shawn Nelson, tells Minnesota Public Radio the sprinklers can add $8,000 to $10,000 to the cost of a new home.

The Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association supports the new law.
