More Speed Indicators in Illinois Construction Zones

Illinois plans to increase its use of speed-indicator boards in construction zones.

An Illinois Department of Transportation pilot program had 13 speed-indicator boards in work areas last year. Radars read oncoming vehicles’ speeds and the boards light up with the measurements. They’re accompanied by a speed-limit sign.

IDOT state safety engineer Priscilla Tobias tells the Belleville News-Democrat on Monday that the signs now will be mandatory at every road construction zone in Illinois with lane restrictions and workers present.

IDOT says signs in the pilot project resulted in “demonstrated reduced speed” through construction zones.

Tobias says it costs about $1,000 to rent a speed-indicator board for six months.
