Final Group of Donated Squad Cars Given to Detroit Police

Detroit police have received the final complement of squad cars funded by $8 million from a group of businesses and foundations.

Police Chief James Craig said Wednesday that the 25 new cars “like the others, are going to be dispersed throughout the city into the neighborhoods.”

Money for the vehicles comes from Penske Corp., Quicken Loans Inc., General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co., Chrysler Group LLC, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, the Kresge Foundation and Platinum Equity LLC.

It paid for 23 EMS units and 100 police cars.

Craig also says the police department will do a 30-day evaluation of cameras that will be worn by officers. The cameras are designed to capture video and audio from an officer’s perspective.
