Ohio Metal Stamping Plant Hit with 21 OSHA Citations

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration says it has issued 21 health and safety citations against a northern Ohio metal stamping company that produces automotive parts after a complaint that a worker’s finger was amputated by an unguarded press machine.

OSHA said that Smithville Manufacturing Co. in Wooster faces potential penalties of $65,800 as a result of a December 2012 inspection.

The agency says the company failed to ensure operation guards were in place on mechanical power presses. OSHA says the company also failed to establish and train workers in areas including use of fire extinguishers and hazards of chemicals in the workplace.

There was no answer to calls to Smithville.

The company has 15 days to comply, request a conference or contest the findings
