Rubble Remains Months After Southwest Indiana City’s Fire

A southwestern Indiana city is still trying to get rid of the big rubble pile that remains from a former department store building that burned down in December.

Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum says city officials are now working with Vincennes University and Good Samaritan Hospital to pool resources and efforts to clean up the downtown site.

The Vincennes Sun-Commercial reports that the owner of the Gimbel Corner building didn’t have insurance and that the city has paid to secure the site since the fire.

Yochum says he doesn’t want the city to buy the property and plans legal action against the owner for reimbursement.

The building that dated to the 1850s was long home of the Gimbels Department Store and recently housed antiques and home exterior businesses.
