Homeland Security Indiana State Fair Booth Offers Fake Quake

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is shaking things up at the state fair.

The Homeland Security booth near the covered bridge on the state fairgrounds features an earthquake simulator that fakes the intense shaking that can occur during a real quake.

The main risk of earthquake is in southwest Indiana, from the New Madrid seismic zone that’s centered in Missouri and the Wabash Valley seismic zone that straddles the Illinois and Indiana state line.

Homeland Security Executive Director Joe Wainscott says the simulator illustrates the value of being prepared for an earthquake or any other emergency.

The simulator is a joint presentation of Homeland Security and the Indiana Geological Survey at Indiana University. It and the booth will only be on display through Aug. 12.
