Earthquake Simulator Offers Science Safety Tips

Indiana residents wanting to learn what an earthquake feels like in a safe environment will have opportunities this year through a partnership between the Indiana Geological Survey and the state’s Department of Homeland Security.

An earthquake simulator known as the Quake Cottage mimics the shaking experienced in earthquakes of magnitudes from 5.5 to 8.0. The inside of the simulator resembles a living room and includes a large window so audiences can watch participants inside while the simulator is operating.

Organizers say the goal of the simulator is to educate people about the science of earthquakes so they can prepare.

The Quake Cottage will be available for public demonstrations in June at the Monroe County Fairgrounds and in Indianapolis in October.
