Chicago Apartment Manager to Pay $2.7M to Fall Victim’s Family

A Chicago property management company has agreed to pay $2.7 million to the family of a man who died after falling through a gap in deck railings at a friend’s apartment.

The law firm Corboy and Demetrio announced the settlement with Kenard Management Corp. on Nov. 29.

Michael Doyle died Jan. 1, 2007, after falling three stories. The 26-year-old man was celebrating New Year’s Eve with friends when he tripped and fell.

Attorneys for the victim’s family say Kenard Management knew the railing system was defective and could have prevented the death with the right repairs.

A phone message left for the management company’s attorney was not immediately returned.
