After Child Fatality, Ohio Lawmakers Push for School Bus Seat Belts

June 4, 2010

State lawmakers say a school bus crash that killed an eastern Ohio kindergarten student has given new urgency to a proposal requiring seat belts on school buses.

Six-year-old Kasey King of Frazeysburg died June 2 when a bus went off a road and flipped over on its way to Nashport Elementary School, about 45 miles east of Columbus. The driver and six other students were hurt.

Hours later, an Ohio House panel gave unanimous approval to a bill to require seat belts on all new and refurbished school buses, starting in 2014. Members of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee said they learned of the accident and felt a need to take quick action on the legislation.
