In answer to your questions, yes, part of the purpose of the suit is to punish the manufacturer (that\’s why they have what they call PUNITIVE damages – duh !) I would guess most liability payments are due to \”mistakes\” not 100% intentional acts. That bus driver that drove off the bridge recently certainly didn\’t do that on purpose, but the bus company is still liable for the \”mistake.\” No, the standard of care for animals isn\’t the same as for people, but it certainly should require a company to not sell poisonous pet food ! Even aside from humanitarian reasons, what do you think it would do for the pet food business if no one could rely on the safety of the products ? If businesses want people to buy their products, they should want to be held accountable/responsible. As for your other comments, I feel sorry for you – we get what we give, and you are obviously a cold, callous individual. Some people don\’t care for kids either. Maybe someone should have told the parents of the ball players that died on the bus \”All people die sooner or later\” (using your analogy)

    Hey Bill,

\”All pets die sooner or later\” Yes, that\’s correct. And all people die sooner or later, so don\’t let me see you cry when someone in your family dies!

    What a F\’ering stupid idiot!

    Pam,

\”It disgusts me that they used animals to test their products when they knew that something was wrong with the food!\”

How else would you test how well pets like the pet food? Feed it to… what? They didn\’t know it was bad until they tested it.

They should have let the public know sooner, and now they will be sued.

I think all anyone wants when there is a mistake/situation which involves the public is honesty–in a timely manner. The thing that irks me is when a situation occurs, the companies at fault wait too long to say anything. And for what? Sooner or later the truth will come out anyway and wouldn\’t it have been the more honorable road to make this unfortunate knowledge public ASAP? I was upset with TJ MAXX and affiliates for not saying anything to the public after their databases were compromised with shoppers\’ account info–they disclosed the breach weeks after it happened. I guess if that\’s how you do business, you may not necessarily deserve to get nailed to the wall in every case but you leave yourself open to that possibility.

In this case I would have liked the pet food company to step forward and volunteer to pay the vet costs for those who lost their furry friends. Even if you ended up with a few money grubbers out there the cost would have been a lot less than a class action lawsuit–and possible money grubbers surfacing either way. I think in these cases people are more angry at how something is handled rather than the fact that it happened. One of the first things you hear in almost any basic customer service training is the idea of service recovery when things don\’t go well. Yes, people make mistakes and sometimes things happen that sren\’t intended. So, now, how do you rectify the problem? Wouldn\’t it be a novel idea if the company stepped up before they were forced to do anything?

I sympathize with those who lost their furry loved ones. I have two cats who I also consider to be \”my kids\”. Aside from all the debates, I feel bad for the people who have experienced a loss due to this unfortunate situation.

I am saddened by the loss of so many pets, but some of you need to get a grip on reality. Byproducts aren\’t safe for animal consumption? What do you think they eat in the wild, only the prime cuts of the animals they kill? Give me a break.

And did I get this right? One of the posters is blaming his dog\’s death 2 years ago on this tainted dog food that came out this year? Don\’t you think this would have been noticed sooner if it has been going on that long?

I know people get attached to their pets, but these ARE NOT children, no matter how much you spoil them. Do NOT compare the loss of a pet to the loss of a child.

My 6 yr old corgi/mix, Sugar Bear died friday after being treated for 5 days and $5000. at VCA hospital for \’sudden kidney failure\’. No one should comment on this travesty in any negative way, if they dont have or never have had animals/pets. You dont know what it is like, so go to hell ******* ***\’s …….I hope you recarnate back as one of the poisoned ones.
For the rest of you> get our animal food regulated with the FDA. I dont care how much we have to pay for pet food, now. It was awfull watching my baby die for the cause of manufacturers to make as much money as possible. I\’l spend my money towards the FDA to regulate now>
