China: Landslide Traps Dozens in Tibet Mine Area

March 30, 2013

State media report that a large-scale landslide has trapped dozens of workers in a gold mining area in China’s Tibetan region.

China Central Television said Friday that the landslide occurred in the morning in the Maizhokunggar county of Lhasa, the regional capital, and that rescue efforts were underway.

The official Xinhua News Agency says the exact number of workers trapped is unclear but that dozens of workers from a subsidiary of the China National Gold Group Corp. were believed to be buried.

Doctors reached at the local county hospital say they were told to prepare to receive survivors but none have arrived.

County officials reached by phone confirmed the landslide had occurred but had no further details. Calls to the company’s general phone line rang unanswered.
