Tougher Regulations for Jitney Buses in New Jersey

February 3, 2014

Jitney bus owners in New Jersey face tougher regulations under a new law that followed the death of a baby.

Authorities say a jitney driver was using his cellphone when he veered off a street in West New York and struck a light pole, which fell onto the stroller and killed 8-month old Angelie Paredes in July.

Under the new law, jitney owners must ensure their drivers are properly screened and have valid licenses. Within a year, they must also display a number that passengers can call to report safety concerns.

The driver involved in the accident is charged with death by auto, reckless driving and using his cellphone while driving.
